For centuries women made samplers to practice and demonstrate the skills they had acquired, to express their spirituality, to reinforce their life goals, and to hide rebellious thoughts and opinions in needlework. The samplers included known and secret symbols, prayers, and philosophy.

In this series of works I have demonstrated the skills I have acquired, repurposed old pieces in the forms of weaving and collage, honored traditional artmakers and outsider artists, and hidden my thoughts and philosophies. For the most part each of these pieces have taken several years to complete. I would work fervently on them when I had things on my mind that I could confront through the “sampler,” then I would set it aside while I worked on something else.
